Pioneering Inclusive Community Engagement for Maui with Hyperlocal Data for the Department of Energy through NREL

The US Department of Energy announced Island Way Technology, LLC as one of the Stage 1 winners for sharing solar PV performance data from independently owned solar PV systems in Upcountry Maui for research contributed to addressing solar panel degradation due to hardware design and environmental conditions. The research will also be used in guiding ongoing design of more reliable solar technology and data over the next 6 years.

We have embarked on a remarkable journey, showcasing how technology can foster inclusive communities’ engagement with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) through the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). Our community partnerships within CitiWave.io’s ecosystem for the NREL Solar Data Initiative highlights the power of inclusive data and community engagement.

Technology-Driven Triumph for Inclusive Communities

We aimed to make a more significant impact as participants by choosing Track A for our entry, representing rooftop solar PV owners from Upcountry Maui disadvantaged communities, and harnessed CitiWave.io‘s advanced technology solutions to create a more inclusive and engaged community.

Data: The Catalyst for Inclusive Communities

Community approved data is the catalyst for ensuring all community challenges and needs are being considered in the design and management of solutions for a sustainable and equitable world. With CitiWave.io, we empower non-profits with a stack of modern digital tools and technology services to collect and analyze environmental and performance data from multiple solar PV systems. This process generates rich datasets along with a consumable REST API that is instrumental in fostering inclusive community research and development initiatives through partnerships with community stakeholders like NREL and the Department of Energy.

Citiwave’s Integration with Enphase Energy’s API provides real-time data reads directly from solar panels and other components of the rooftop PV systems. Collaborations with LoRaWAN sensor manufacturers like Vutility add live AC current data, enriching the dataset with performance and production data beyond the limits of Enphase’s readings.

Community-Driven Innovation for Inclusive Communities

Sovereign hyperlocal data and decentralized identities linked to the collected data ensure secure data sharing with entities like NREL and DOE while maintaining data and device ownership is recorded against data consumption to forge a path for a data exchange marketplace that’s inclusive and equitable.

A Brighter Tomorrow for Inclusive Communities

Our journey serves as a testament to the transformative power of technology. It will showcase how innovative organizations can use technology to redefine community engagement, make a significant impact, and inspire change.

As we celebrate this achievement, we invite communities and technology enthusiasts to join the journey of inclusive community engagement. Explore the boundless possibilities that CitiWave.io offers for community-driven solutions. Together, let’s embrace the power of technology to foster inclusive communities, engage with the DOE through NREL’s inclusive data initiatives, and reach new heights for our future world depending on expansive sustainability and equity.
